I want to start CMA lessons, since this is the once one in my city.

www.fiveanimalkungfu.com

This guy teaches hung gar, and im wondering if anyobdy knows if hes a real experienced instructor.
And is $75 a month expensive for martial art lessons?

also, i saw this site bullshido.net, that says all kung fu is useless and only wreslting works. Deoes anyone got anythign to say about it? I realy don't know what to think.

I'm aware of the above sifu's parent school (hung ga montreal), and from what I hear, they are fairly highly regarded. However, I have no first hand experience at all - being on a different continent and all.....

That's all I know.

Ignore any of the CMA is rubbish, only wrestling works nonsense. Simple fact is if you train more than you type you will be better off!! Time is short and my talk/train ratio is dropping.

I lurk over at Bullshido sometimes. They all seem like they're about 15 years old and, to them, the only worthwhile martial arts are BJJ and Muay Thai. To them, kung fu guys just run around in pajamas and can't fight. They feel the same way about Tai Kwon Do. Kenpo and jujitsu styles other than BJJ are tolerated. When things get boring they spend their time attacking Ashida Kim. I'm new here, and just run across this thread.

Don't know anything about the Hung Gar school.

Just to clear the ais up a bit... I post every now and then on BULSHIDO, so do a lot of kwooners.
Basically, they have a lot experienced guys there. A lot of these guys are not afraid to put their system on the line. I would refrain from saying that they a just a bunch of 15 year old kids just cus we don't agree with their ways. BULLSHIDO has exposed a lot of crap.. ASHIDA KIM included

I am a WC guy and I would love to go to one of their meetings, this has nothing to do with style but rather who gets it and who doesn't.

I can't comment on that school but your evaluation of Bullshido forum is inflamatory. If people there say criticise this kwoon then there is a fair chance that something isn't right about it.

They certainly aren't "all kung fu is useless, only wrestling works".

Sigh....that's always seemd wierd how "we" get stuck with that rep. even though most of the mods are into kung fu and at least of the 2 most feared and respected MMA guys there are gong fu guys.

One of them is/was a mod here as well.

I can't open the linke to the fiveanimals kungfu site though so I can't comment on that.

If you like huge beefy guys go!

just kidding.

ditto on specs post.

In one article the guy says first lesson is free. Go check it out and see of you're comfortable with it.
That's what I would do if I wanted to learn something.

lol.

Awsome. Always great to have guys bigger and stronger than you to train with.

The best way to deal with and intimidating training group is to just be friendly, straightforward and don't act tough. Your classmates are not the enemy. They're on YOUR side.

Eh, i feel sad. the place is a dump and im a afriad of that area because no one lives there. My parents won't let me go.

I'm not giving up though. I'm doing kung fu basics like horse stances, and if anybody knows any free kung fu tips and techniques please tell me and I'll practice.

I know I'll probably do it wrong, but there's no other place in my area that teaches kung fu.

It's stupid to say that kung fu doesn't works, but wrestling yes! Not any art is superior to another, it only depends on how you apply it.

Shush!

You did NOT see that on the site. I know this because I am an Admin there and I do CMA. Omega, a pro MMA fighter, does CMA, Phrost the OWNER of the site does CMA. So shush. Now some CMA are not veiwed favorably, for instance we've had an influx of WC nuts, but many arts a put under strutiny.

I think that it's always easy to say that MY system is the better one...
However I don't think there is a trueth in that...
It depends the situation I think...
For example, somebody (twice as heavy as me) once challenged me to show me that his Muay Thai was better than Kung Fu...
(Not only was he physically stronger and heavier, but also at that time I only trained wushu forms, so he was very probably right...)
So I said yes, but give me a minute, I'm going to get a stick.
He said that wasn't an honest fight, and I replied 'but fighting with a weapon is kung fu...

In short, I think every system has its stronger and weaker parts...
In Muay Thai you learn great ass kicking, but what do you do if a grappler gets you on the floor, or if your opponnent is heavier ?
Wrestling... definately serious stuff, but what do you do if there are two attackers ?
Kung Fu (I practise Shaolin Kung Fu) very complete, a great variety of techniques... however the best fighters of my club all trained Muay Thai for a while and definately know how to resist getting your ass kicked better than I do... however, give them a sword, and they'll probably cut there meat with it...

Last but not least... I think that being a good fighter is about knowing the different styles, because if you don't know another system at all it may surprise you, as I found out with a Capoeira fighter... me, the person that used to say that Capoeira is dance...

Every martial at is great, and we can learn a lot from eachother...
Every martial art is Kung Fu, for Kung Fu means nothing else than making a big effort to learn something...

Make the arm-bar an arm-break, get up, deal with the other guy.

But seriously, no need to get into yet another style vs style thing. The consensus on this board has firmly been established that "its the individual, not the art". For investigation of effectiveness, I'd recommend Bullshido. For discussion of CMA amongst CMA practitioners, I'd recommend this site. Take your pick. :)
