Let's have more fun discussing a video

You can get the video here (14 mb, wmv)

I did this a long time ago, trying to demonstration how the tantui drills in our school could be applied.

now have fun

oaky ...

1) Where did you find Taky Kimura or Inosanto and Steal the OFFICIAL Bruce Lee B&W Demo Camera and Set Dressings from ?

2) Take that shirt back to wherever they sell the Don Ho Signature Collection . (aloha-oi !)

3) Half that stuff wouldnt work , the other half you stole from REAL MAs like Wrestling and Judo , admit it ! </International_Waters>

Which style is your tantui derived from, Ffab?

Shaolin Nei Pai.
The take down shown here were demonstrated to explain the common principles found in tantui drills and other "styles". One thing we especially like is neck control and arm / neck leverage.
The shirt .. I had to remove it since the partner, who I was meeting for the first time and had for instruction "attack as you wish" tore the chest pocket.

When that video was shot (1997 or 1998 I think) RSBD was not yet the latest craze and I admit I had little exposure to it.

Definitely I wouldn't do the things the same way now.

Great vid Ffab. Not exactly sure what Tantui is but the application looks good! ;) I'm assuming what we saw was the practical application of tantui? Something like Bunkai? Damn us OMAists! :)

Lovely clip

I do a style of bagua that comes via Shi Ji Dong who was a tantui specialist before he encountered bagua. I will certainly be recommending my students have a look at your video. Tres joli ffab.

Nice video -well thought out.

Some interesting takedowns. Does Tantui use a lot of arm locking cos it seemed to be an element of nearly every counter you did?

It would be interesting to hear what you'd do different if you were demoing the application of Tantui today -how it/you have developed and perspectives shifted.

In order to target the new demographics, I would wager he'd be doing the demo wearing camo pants and sunglasses, with an m1A1 strapped to his back and a glock in a concealed holster, as well as the demo being done in a back alley in chicago with "Th3 Str33T" in garish spraypaint on the brick wall behind him. Clearly it would have a soundtrack too, possibly "welcome to the jungle."

Please keep this discussion friendly and on topic. Leave any beef for the lounge and the Other threads.

The applications look nice to me. Cannot discuss them too much since my takedowns and locks are not as good.

The only thing is, maybe if you had some kind of hidden guard, it would have improved the rection time. There are similar things to what we do, but you seem to use more throws and the hips for unbalance the opponent.

@KC Tantui is just a single repetitive drill, one of your abhorred "Kata" type :)
In our school the 12 tantui are trained to develop some martial principles (1st one is circular inside out and outside in for instance)
Arm lock ... I dunno, it probably came with the flow :P
what we are really into is using leverage to unbalance, applying several forces (vectors) in different direction.

What would I do differently now ? well I gained a bit of "weight" so I could afford to enter more directly. The moves would surely be less visible.
I would also (I hope) have a better alignement.

@Sun Tzu As I said it was a demo to show that throw down could be also be found in something like a shaolin derivative, using the same principles as basic punching kicking.
The idea was not to demonstrate Real Stuff in a "almost Real Settings", but to keep the motion visible enough to recognize the Tantui principle behind it.
I guess I am using a lot of hip throws because I am short, but as you know, CMA has a lot of "barrage" kind of throws.

And I STILL think Linda Lee will be up yoru ass about Copyright Infringements or somethign ...

Al;l seriousness tho , you should do them again , and see what the Differecnes are .

Not for any of OUR bloody sakes , mind you , but for your own .
