Is shooto an ametuer comp???

just wandering if shooto is an ametuer comp.. or indeed what is an ametuer comp with minimal rules in the Melb area.... lately i have gained an interest to at least have a look at these as it is often hard to find people with whom i can spar.

I think there was a shooto comp in Melbourne last year in Albert Park. From what I heard the standard was pretty high, so unless you're like instructor level I wouldn't be bothering. From memory I think one of the guys from the DeBeen(spel??) BJJ group was in there and maybe someone from the Extreme BJJ--I could be wrong, this is all from memory.

There is a heap of good kickboxing and MT in Melbourne, so if you're interested in that then you'll have a lot more choices.

i am not really interested in MT or KB due to the need for big bulky gloves... really only leaves the mma thing thx to small gloves that still enable palms and so forth. i take it from your reply that it is an ametuer comp?.... as for the lvl of skill first i gotta see it, i do not like diving into muddy water where there may be rocks just beneath the surface i have talked to a couple of the schools that teach shootfighting a little over the last couple of weeks... will see what happens after my partner gives birth.

Shooto can be both amature or pro.

Shooto (which is actually pronounced SHOOT but is spelled that way from Japanes kana) is a type of match more than a event. The term goes back to pro wrestling where a shoot is a real match and a show is cheorographed.

There is a, b and c class shooto. C class is amateur, A is pro, not sure about B. C class guys can still be pretty tough, even though the rules are slightly modified (no striking on the ground).

thx for the info guys.... sweaty dog can u tell me more please i think i saw somewhere that u r in melbourne is this true? when u say no striking on the ground do you mean period or from the mount?

Amateur Shooto rules

No striking at all on the ground in C class apparently. No headbutts or elbows and you wear headgear. The rounds are only 2 x three minutes as well. A and B are both pro according to that website, the difference is one more round in A class.
